Above the village of Strečno, on a limestone cliff of approximately 420 metres, stands the medieval Strečno Castle. It is on the left bank of the river Váh near Žilina. Archaeological discoveries document a settlement of the castle cliff as early as prehistoric times – the Iron Age and later, during the Slavic Age, where a wooden fortress most likely stood. The Medieval stone castle was built in the first half of the 14th century. It changed hands many times. Its notable owners included the Pongrác family, Pavol Kinizi, and the Kostka, Dersfy and Wesselenyi families. The history of the castle lasted until the end of the 17th century, when Emperor Leopold I ordered it to be destroyed.
